Role Updates: Engineer & Guardian Angel
Specialized Crewmates who master vents or watch from beyond to protect the mission.
The Engineer and Guardian Angel represent specialized variations of the standard Crewmate role, introduced to deepen strategic gameplay within the franchise. The Engineer grants living players limited access to ventilation systems typically reserved for Impostors, while the Guardian Angel transforms a dead player into a spectral observer capable of detecting hidden threats.

Lore & Background
The Guardian Angel concept stems from a metaphysical phenomenon observed among crew members who have been eliminated during critical missions. Rather than fading into nothingness, their consciousness remains tethered to the ship's network. They cannot interact with physical controls but gain an ethereal sense of awareness, allowing them to perceive Impostor movements through walls and vents. This spectral duty ensures that even fallen heroes contribute to the survival of their remaining team.
In Their Own Story
The red light flickered in Electrical as the Engineer slipped into the vent just seconds before the doors locked down. Below, a shadow moved in Engineering, but no one was there yet. From the ceiling, a translucent blue figure watched silently, eyes glowing with spectral energy. The Guardian Angel saw the Impostor crouch behind the panel, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. With a silent thought, the ghost signaled the living crew on the map screen, pointing toward the danger zone without revealing their own location.
Reader's Guide
The Engineer and Guardian Angel roles arrived during a significant content expansion that introduced new maps and mechanics to the franchise in late 2021. Initially, Crewmates were strictly restricted from using ventilation systems, creating a clear distinction between them and Impostors regarding movement capabilities. The addition of the Engineer changed this dynamic by granting specific Crewmates limited access to vents, allowing for faster travel but with strict cooldown timers to prevent abuse during critical moments. This update aimed to increase strategic depth during task completion phases across all available maps. Simultaneously, the Guardian Angel role provided a unique experience for eliminated players who wished to remain involved. Instead of spectating passively from a distance, these spectral observers could detect Impostor venting and sabotage locations in real-time through their ghostly vision. This allowed dead Crewmates to continue contributing vital information to living teammates without revealing their own presence as ghosts on the map screen. Both roles were integrated into the settings menu alongside other role options like Scientist and Sheriff during the same patch cycle. Over time, balance adjustments tweaked cooldowns and visibility ranges to ensure fair play across different environments. These updates remain a staple of modern gameplay modes, offering variety beyond the classic Crewmate versus Impostor dynamic found in early versions of the game history.
